Commission an Oil Painting

Commission Me

Everything is pristine -- and exquisite! I absolutely love seeing all the texture and dimension and am wondering what I can commission you for next. So professional. It feels very special and high quality.

Julia, MN

Process

It has been a privilege to work with several clients on commissioned works over the years. If you've looked at my Body of Work and would like me to create something for you, please reach out with this Commission Inquiry Form.

If it looks like I'm a good fit, we discuss specifics, and from there we move into a contract, deposit, sketch, approval, a long period of painting with periodic updates to the client, and finally delivery.

Timeline

After the sketch or mockup is approved, painting takes 8 to 15 weeks, with a total timeline of 3 to 4 months. Expedited painting is available for an additional fee.

Pricing & Payment

Commission prices are based on size, subject, detail, complexity, and timing (see information needed for a quote). Before work begins, a 50% non-refundable deposit is required. Significant changes during the process add cost, and final payment is required before delivery.

My Styles

I tend to paint traditional realism, impressionism, and generally representational art. Please see my Body of Work for reference. I also love trying new things and am open to new styles -- send reference images to inquire.

Reference Images

I paint largely from reference photos and/or inspiration images. For detailed subjects like buildings, faces, and animals, a reference photo is required. If the client is local, I can likely take photos of the subject, potentially included or at an additional fee. Inspiration images are for general theme, style, and colors.

The Contract

The agreement to paint for a client is defined in a contract that is negotiated and signed before work begins. It details the composition, price, deposit, client changes, potential additional charges, copyright, etc.

Copyright

All in-progress images and artwork are owned by the artist and may not be published or reproduced without written permission. Purchased paintings are owned by the client for private, physical display. Prints or digital rights may be available.

Am I a Good Fit for You?

I love to paint with oils, which is why I do it. Creative, artistic painting for me is a labor of love and requires trust and freedom, as my painting is a process of exploration and discovery. When given freedom by clients, it is my great privilege and honor to paint for them.

The commission process also can include small corrections and redirection. In at least half of my commissions, I've reworked elements of the painting without any problem -- often it has turned out to be the foreground. Even one large change or a couple minor changes are expected and part of the process when needed.

In circumstances where a client does not have a clear vision or wants to constantly interact with the artist and painting, I recommend the client either paint the work him or herself or find a painter who talks of the process being a constant "collaboration."

Landscapes

Landscapes are my specialty and make up the majority of my body of work -- they are always a delight to create! Below are a few commissions in my repertoire. Most of them are based on photos provided by clients, but I have also created landscapes based on inspiration images. If you find you like to change your mind frequently or are not quite sure what you want, a reference photo and specific style references are required.

Portraits

A standard oil portrait is painted on stretched or mounted linen, and includes the head and shoulders with a basic colored background. Additional features and backgrounds are options.

Portraits are based on a high-resolution, digital photo provided by the client. It must be free of external copyrights, or with written documentation that it is free and clear of copyright for the purposes of the oil portrait. The artist generally does not invent features but produces them based on the photo. The artist can potentially take photos of the subject for an additional fee.

Reference images of portrait styles are also helpful, as I can create a range of styles based on the client's taste.

I offer a discount of 15% for students at schools in Larkspur, Monument, and Palmer Lake, Colorado; in Big Lake, Minnesota; and for military families. The client must request this discount before or during the process and will not receive a refund after final payment. Discount includes all painting, but not (optional) framing.

Architecture & Buildings

Pricing

Commission pricing typically runs 1.5 to 6x higher than my basic landscape artwork at that size, depending on subject, complexity, and detail. Basic landscapes are the simplest, with details like buildings, animals, and faces likely being more costly.

Below are the basic price guidelines, current as of August 2025. Please let me know if you are interested in different dimensions.

Reach out if you are interested -- I'd love to hear from you!
